Welcome to the first edition of the Get Covered SD Newsletter! Here, you'll find updates, resources, and inspiring stories to support your work in helping individuals and families access health coverage.

In May, the Get Covered Coalition launched a campaign to gather stories surrounding affordable coverage. These stories highlight how essential Marketplace and Medicaid are, while helping to break down stigma and misconceptions. The campaign also serves as a powerful tool to show the vital impact of our work as Navigators, community health workers, and assisters.

In our story library you’ll read powerful statements like:

“We don’t just enroll people—we help create the foundation they need to rebuild their lives.”

“Medicaid didn’t just give me health care. It gave me a lifeline. It gave me a chance to heal when I had nothing left to hold onto.”

WHAT TO KNOW NOW

Pending Work Requirements

The South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS) plans to submit an application to CMS requesting permission to require adults to prove they meet work requirements to get Medicaid. It is said that compliance will be verified during an individual’s normal annual Medicaid renewal and will not be based on a monthly minimum number of hours worked. See the notice here.

Supporting Reenrollment

Many people are losing Medicaid coverage unintentionally. This can happen if their address or phone number is outdated, if they don’t understand the notices they receive, or if they fail to complete their required annual renewal. We can help by making sure people know how to update their information, watch for important mail, and fill out forms on time.

To help prevent loss of coverage, invite your clients to bring in their letters for you to review or log into the South Dakota Medicaid Portal to update their contact information, view important notices, and complete their renewal form online. Encourage your clients to take these steps or reach out to DSS if they need help understanding notices or for more information.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

In April, Get Covered South Dakota partnered with South Dakota Voices for Peace and Horizon Health for a health insurance enrollment event in response to the Cimpl layoffs, which affected hundreds of people.
