Practical Strategies for Engaging People with Diabetes
November 17, 12:00 pm CT/11:00 am MT
Living with and managing diabetes can be challenging, particularly when patients are balancing competing priorities, experiencing diabetes distress, facing social or cultural barriers, or are not yet ready to make changes. For health center staff, the challenge is often finding meaningful ways to engage patients while making the most of limited time during clinical encounters.
This practical webinar will focus on strategies for meeting people with diabetes where they are. Participants will explore ways to identify what matters most to patients, recognize readiness for change, and use person-centered, nonjudgmental communication to encourage engagement.
The session will highlight practical communication strategies, including brief motivational interviewing techniques, to help shift conversations from telling patients what they “should” do to working together to identify realistic, meaningful next steps. Patient examples will help demonstrate how these approaches can be incorporated into everyday clinical interactions. The webinar will also explore opportunities for team-based support to help patients work toward their diabetes management goals between visits.
